Australia: Love it or leave it!

Who was it who said this:

"Australia is our compassionate mother, and I say to every person living in Australia, from the person in the highest office down to the ordinary man in the street: love this country or leave it, shape up or ship out."

A) The leader of a right wing group addressing an anti-immigration rally?

B) A Nationals party MP?

C) Australia's top muslim cleric during a sermon to mark the end of Ramadan?

If you answered C, you'd be right, at least according to this article on Al Jazeera.

Don't get too excited. In the same sermon he said that the US and Israel are the two major threats to world peace, and called Bush a terrorist.

For a number of reasons including this idiotic nationalism I am ashamed to admit that I am Australian. When I go overseas I dare not admit that I am a 6th generation Australian and more often than not lie when I meet people and tell them that I am Canadian. Australia love it or leave it? I would if I could!

In a country where we are constantly told we are racist, constantly forced to live with anti-australian sentiment only directed at people with anglo heritage, where the grandchildren of immigrants from decades before commit violent crimes and riots all in the name of pride for their country of origin, it is such an empowering feeling to actually feel good about being able to say that we are also proud of our heritage. We are also proud of our race. We are also proud of our country and everything that we strive to acheive. No matter where you come from or what your heritage is, be proud. I hope this country is as good to any immigrants as it has been to the rest of us. It is the lucky country. However, its only been recently that we of anglo backgrounds could say "We are proud to be Australian, we are proud of our white heritage, welcome to our country but if you dont love it....leave." The mushti is obviously a proud australian.
