Hmmm... Global Warming Nothing New?

Yesterday's NYT had an article describing the results of a recent expedition to retrieve sediment cores from beneath the arctic sea floor. Evidently, the amount of organic material recovered is much larger than scientists expected, suggesting that this area had been significantly warmer in the distant past due to natural causes. Also, all this organic material makes it possible that significant oil deposits may have formed beneath the Arctic Ocean.

I wouldn't be so sure that Global Warming is nothing new, and that it is not going to be a problem in our, or our children's lives.

There is a surprisingly large amount of peer-reviewed evidence that shows that it is a problem. This work has been going on for a long time. I can remember a book on this back in the 70s called "Inadvertent Climate Modification" from MIT Press. Now people are saying that carbon dioxide is a byproduct of industrial processes and it should be treated like garbage and disposed of and that this disposal should be part of the cost of making a product, like disposing other garbage. That makes sense to me, and if it is possible, that seems like the responsible thing to do.

I do not want to be overly pessimistic, but I think we have to face the facts and not dismiss offhand what could be a real problem for our children and our country.

But, then again, it would be nice to dive out from my 13th floor balcony into a nice warm ocean and body-surf the perfect waves……
